ACT I
Urinetown opens with the poor asleep at Public Amenity # 9, as they wake up, Officer Lockstock arrives on scene and the cast welcomes the audience to the show, a show about a town with a draught, where everyone needs to pay to pee in order to survive (Urinetown). We then see Bobby Strong and Penelope Pennywise open shop to allow people to pee. The poor complain about the cost of using the facility, and one, Old Man Strong (Bobby's father), attempts to weasle his way out of paying, but Penny turns him down (Privilege to Pee). Strong is removed to the mythical Urinetown, and Lockstock warns Bobby and all the poor about the punishment for peeing incorrectly (Privilege to Pee: reprise).
Lights up on the office of Caldwell B. Cladwell, a rich and powerful man, who has become rich through the use of bathroom fees. Audition Preparation Suggestions for Urinetown
Some of the music is very operettic. However, this is a fast-paced show. Your best choice for an audition song should be an uptempo piece.
Performers preparing for an audition for Urinetown may wish to read these monologues from the show .
